The tornado caused extensive damage beginning in the Southwest part of Tuscaloosa and tracked Northeast into a heavily populated section of Tuscaloosa missing The University of Alabama campus by only a few hundred yards. This tornado ranks as the deadliest in Alabama history with over 65 confirmed fatalities in its 80 mile track from Southwest of Tuscaloosa to just Northeast of downtown Birmingham. This tornado injured over 1,000 people in its path and there are several hundred people still unaccounted for. Recovery and rebuilding will surely take years. As of 5/2/2011, this tornado was rated as EF-4 on the enhanced Fujita scale with sustained winds of between 165 - 200 miles per hour.
